Fluffy mashed potato, sizzling juicy sausages, tasty lip-licking gravy… Mmm we’re almost sounding like an M&S food porn advert – but instead we’re talking about Mother Mash. It’s a “new take” on the traditional sausage and mash food den positioned expensively on Ganton Street just round the back of Carnaby Street. Happily we can report that at £6.95, prices don’t reflect it’s location too much.
The concept is as follows. You take your seat in a comfy diner style booth, and choose exactly how you’d like your S&M to taste. Mash can be one of five flavours – classic, cheesy, chump, cheesy mustard or diy – and smoothed out or chucky style. It’s easy to make mash wrong, it can be too runny or too dry, so we were confident in choice thanks to MM’s claim that “We love mashed potato, it’s the food equivalent of a great big hug.” Then it’s time for the sausages where the options range from pork, cumberland, leek, and vegetable. Alternatively if you’re feeling like a bit of pastry, pies are also an option. Then the final variant, the all important gravy – traditional, liquor, farmers, veggie or onion.
We went, it was yummy. We suggest you do the same. Especially as it’s probably one of the cheapest meals you will find in the area. Portions are a good size, the service was great and everything was quick and fun. Perfect for pre-Sound of Music-ing.
