2009: After failing to block planning permission on a number of disproportionate City skyscrapers, English Heritage decided to take a radical new approach. Successful lobbying saw a seven-storey increase to the historic Tower of London. Thus enhanced, the Norman stronghold could finally live up to its name and compete on the skyline with its more recent neighbours. Everyone wins apart from the wheezing Beefeaters who have to have special stairlifts installed to reach their suddenly loftier quarters.
