We haven’t had any dubious animal news for quite some time. So it was almost as though someone was baiting us when we came across this little news article.
Apparently, sharks have been sighted, and photographed, in Highams Park boating lake, Woodford.
Now, a whale in the Thames is one thing, but three sharks in a man-made pond is decidedly fishy.
Still, local residents remain open-minded. Says one credulous yokel:
I was scared stiff at first. I know I was safe on land but the shivers still went up my spine. If they had got this far inland who's to say what they could do?
Indeed, especially as the boating lake in question is entirely landlocked and over a mile from the nearest major river. Not only would the sharks have needed to evolve some kind of air-breathing organ and an unusual locomotive ability, but they’d also have to negotiate the less salubrious parts of north Walthamstow. Still, nobody’s going to mess with a shark, so it might just be feasible.
