Maybe we just aren't foody enough here at Londonist, but we have to admit to having never heard of a restaurant called Zafferano.

A quick search on Google tells us that it's an expensive little Italian in Knightsbridge..which is why we've never heard of it.

So why are we banging on about it now? Well, becasue Zafferano has just bought the most expensive truffle in the world.

So how much is the most expensive truffle in the world worth? Five hundred? Five thousand? Fifteen thousand?

You might want to take a deep breath and sit down before you read this next bit...Zefferano paid £28,000 for just 1.88 lbs of Italian white truffle during a charity auction in Tuscany.

According to an official from the village where it was found, “The truffle had a really good shape. It was rounded and with no bulges.”

Oh well, why didn't you say? If it didn't have any bulges then we can't see any problem with taking out a second mortgage to buy a fungus.
