Part of our Best Pubs in London microsite. Is your local listed?
Handsome brickwork on the outside, decked out like a gentleman's withdrawing room on the inside, the DofE exudes a ducal class. At least it did until our lot turned up and started making Prince Philip impersonations (oh dear... that comment has now dated - Ed.).
Classy though the decor may be — enough to get it Grade II listed by Historic England — the pub's chief attraction is the monster beer garden out the back which can easily hold more than the pub itself. It needs to, as well. This is a popular spot, with giant sports screens and a sumptuous BBQ (operated by Bodeans). On the warmest, busiest days, don't be surprised to see a high-vis security guard on patrol.
The drinks choice is decent (five ales), while the kitchen serves 'unpretentious pub classics' — the chips certainly didn't last long on our table.
Toilets are, um, eccentric.
