On many trains in London — and across the country too — there is what's known as 'Declassified First Class'. In layman's terms: the train used, has a first class area on a route where no first class ticketing is available, which means that you can sit in the first class bit on a standard class ticket (or Oyster card).

In all these cases, check the timetable to see if there is a '1' in at the top of the column. If there's not — there is no first class on this train, but there may be first class seating.
