A Century Of Teaching Londoners New Things: City Lit Turns 100

This is a sponsored article on behalf of City Lit.

Londoners are inquisitive people. Next year, City Lit will have been in the business of helping them learn new things for 100 years — and you can celebrate with an exclusive 10% discount on all 2019 classes.

So where did it all begin?

Back in September 1919, The City Literary Institute welcomed its first 180 students — some of which included soldiers attending lip-reading classes after suffering hearing loss in the first world war.

Ballooning student numbers meant that by 1939, classes were taking place across different venues in London, necessitating a move to its first purpose-built home in Stukeley Street. In true wartime London spirit, courses continued throughout the second world war, with classes held in air-raid shelters and tube stations during the Blitz — one intrepid music tutor even wheeled a piano underground for recitals.

To this day, City Lit's doors remain open to Londoners willing to learn, with a huge range of one-day tasters, short and longer courses on offer — covering everything from web design and wine tasting, to painting and piano, to Japanese and journalism. They offer courses for people with learning difficulties too, alongside speech therapy, lipreading and British Sign Language — taught in their centre for Deaf Education.

Beekeeping was once taught on the roof of City Lit's old home.

Most of City Lit's courses are taught in its bright, modern building in Covent Garden by an enthusiastic body of experts and practitioners.

And as for the 30,000 Londoners that come through the doors every year? They come from all walks of life, some as young as 19, some as old as 90.
