Spread Eagle

Spread Eagle

The Spread Eagle spreads its wings along Katharine Street, quite at home with the grand buildings of the town hall and clock tower.

The place used to be a bank, back when they used to build them like fortresses. Now it's a pub, and a rather nice one, too (naturally, or we wouldn't have thrown it into this 'best pubs' website).

It's Fuller's through-and-through with the familiar russets, brown panels and brass taps, and a comfortably familiar choice of beer.

In warm weather, the side doors are thrown open to a small outdoor drinking space, which leads naturally into the Clocktower cafe. It's the only beer garden we can think of that's presided over by Queen Victoria.

An upstairs room is available for hire and is also used for fringe theatre and comedy nights.

On Facebook. Quiz night is Sunday.
