The Orange Tree has a lot going for it. It's big, for starters, which is handy when you're across the road from the station, and right next to one of London's best-loved small theatres (also called the Orange Tree).
Consequently, it can be busy just before a show, or early evenings, but the place tends to mop people up well.
This is a Young's pub, with the usual selection of good grub and reliable cask (various Young's and the locally brewed Naked Ladies). The brewery tends to furnish its pubs a little more softly than others chains, and the Orange Tree is no exception, with cosy cushions, padded chairs and bookshelves the order of the day.
The place feels like it should have a cracking beer garden round the back (perhaps with orange trees), but sadly the densely built Richmond town centre allows for no such thing. There are, however, a few covered tables in the small yard out front. For longer stays, the Orange Tree also has a few hotel bedrooms upstairs — a handy place to stay if you're in town for the rugby, with Twickenham a short bus ride down the road.
