The Lowlander, as the name hints, was a Belgian-led bar, and one of the area's best known drinking spots. Sadly, it closed in the summer of 2025, but in its place a solid corner pub has emerged.

In some ways, it's a reopening. The Marlborough Head was the original name of the establishment, still gently emblazoned across the top of the building. It's all change inside, though. Gone are the long tables and 'you really should be eating' vibe in favour of a good old traditional pub.

While it's a shame to lose the Belgian beers, this Urban Pubs & Bars reawakening does at least have a good selection of British tipples, with a mix of mainstream and microbrewery options, including a couple of casks. The food is top-notch, with a varied menu of small plates and tempting mains.

The ground floor room is handsome enough, but head upstairs to the balcony space for the best seats in the house. This can also be booked for no fee, an ideal spot for groups of 20-30 people (as we know from personal experience).
