The roaring Blackwall Tunnel Approach isn't exactly the first place you'd look for a cosy, comfortable pint, but the Galvanisers Union delivers in zinc-coated spades.

Named after a once-prominent industry, the Galvanisers is a curious mix of styles. The front bar is certainly memorable. The main table is a rescued workbench, still retaining the occasional vice. The bar, meanwhile, is festooned with wrought iron.

This is part of the Antic chain, noted for its imaginative restoration of ailing or semi-derelict sites. In this case, the group took over an old-school East End boozer called the Duke of Wellington and brought it to life for the young professional crowd.

It's certainly a very pleasant place to linger, with candlelit tables, distressed furniture and very friendly staff. Look out for the Nintendo 64 in one corner, where you can compete at Mario Kart. Almost as good as having a pool table.
