"Let's dance!" exclaimed David Bowie back in 1983. Now, the Spanish choreographer Marcos Morau is taking him up on the offer.
In the latest cultural doff of the cap to the pop visionary who died just over a decade ago, a major new dance work dedicated to David Bowie — as devised by Morau in cahoots with London's Sadler's Wells dance organisation, Bunkamura (Japan) and La Veronal (Spain) — is coming to London.
Taking its cue from Ziggy/Aladdin/the Thin White Duke's chameleon-like versatility, Subject to Change - A Dance for David Bowie will sweep audiences through the rock star's various incarnations, by way of a spectacular show featuring Bowie-style costumes, and soundtracked by reimagined Bowie music.
Says Marcos Morau: "Subject to Change is a work about that cycle of reincarnation. About the phenomenon itself: the act of dying and being reborn, again and again, as a way of remaining alive. I'm looking forward to having the opportunity to, in my own way, bring to life a new work that responds to Bowie's creation, and re-creation, through dance. The cycle that Bowie enacted across his artistic life is re-enacted here, in sound and movement, in real time, on stage."
If we've got you excited for this, know that Subject to Change is subject to a wait, debuting at Luxembourg's Les Théâtres de la Ville in spring 2028, and not enjoying its UK premiere, at Sadler's Wells Theatre in London, until autumn 2028. It then heads to Tokyo in spring 2029.
Though it appears to have 'hit' written all over it, whether Subject to Change can match the genius of this Bowie-Jagger dance sans music remains to be seen:
