It's been a long time coming but now it's official: Oxford Street will finally go car-free... for one day, at least.
While consultations and conflabs about the possible traffic-free future of London's premier shopping street continue, Londoners will get a flavour of what an Oxford Street sans cars would look like, courtesy of 'This Is Oxford Street', an event that will see half a mile of the thoroughfare — from Orchard Street (next to Selfridges) to Oxford Circus — go traffic-free between 12pm-8pm on Sunday 21 September 2025.
A number of buses will be re-routed and truncated as part of the plans.
Spearheaded by the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan — who is pushing hard for the permanent pedestrianisation of Oxford Street by 2027 — the day will see a flurry of activity, including pop-ups from brands including Major League Baseball; food and drink stalls; live music and performances; a wellness village hosted by Holland and Barrett; selfie spots; and a 'This is Future' area, offering a glimpse into the plans to transform Oxford Street into a full-time pedestrian-friendly destination.
Says Sadiq Khan: "This is a fantastic opportunity to see Oxford Street in a whole new light, traffic-free, full of music, great food, pop-ups and entertainment for everyone. As Mayor, I'm determined to unlock Oxford Street’s true potential and deliver a world-class, accessible, clean, avenue."
World Car Free Day falls on Monday 22 September this year, although at the moment, it's unclear what plans there are for other streets across London.
