London's official New Year's Eve plans in Trafalgar Square have been cancelled due to the ongoing Covid-19 situation.

It was announced back in October that the usual fireworks on the Thames wouldn't go ahead this year. In November, we were told that a new, ticketed event would take place in Trafalgar Square instead.

However, due to the rapid increase in Covid-19 cases in the capital, uncertainty over the Omicron variant, and the declaration of a major incident, Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has taken the decision to cancel the event, and encourage people to see in 2022 at home instead.

A special broadcast will instead be shown on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, celebrating London as a city, and looking back at its 2021 highlights. Why not support London's struggling hospitality industry by ordering your midnight, at-home tipple from some of London's best cocktail delivery services?

Rio, Paris, New York and Berlin are among other major cities to scale down or cancel their New Year's Eve celebrations this year too.
