The Charles Dickens Museum is welcoming home a 176-year-old portrait of the famous British author this autumn.
The portrait, by artist Margaret Gillies, had been missing for 174 years before it was rediscovered at an auction in South Africa.
A fundraising campaign was launched by the museum in November 2018 to raise the £108,000 required to secure the painting.
Cindy Sughrue, Director of the Charles Dickens Museum, said:
We are so excited to be bringing the ‘lost’ portrait home and are extremely grateful for, and touched by, the generous support that we have received from individual donors all over the world, and our major funders, Art Fund and the Arts Council England/V&A Purchase Grant Fund.
The portrait goes on display from 24 October 2019 at the Charles Dickens Museum, 48 Doughty Street, WC1N 2LX.
