Forget eggnog and mulled wine, because this festive season is all about a different sort of tipple — one that will still be socially acceptable to quaff long after the tree and decorations have come down. We're talking mead.
Though it's around 9000 years old, the honey wine is having a bit of a moment right now, with craft meaderies popping up all over East Coast urban hotspots like Brooklyn, Detroit and Baltimore. And, thanks to Gosnells of London, it's now making a splash this side of the pond, too.
Those with their finger firmly on the pulse of London's drinking scene are probably already well-acquainted with this award-winning, lightly sparkling mead. But since launching four years ago, Gosnells has been dreaming of something even bigger: a mead made exclusively using local London honey. Just in time for Christmas, that dream has become reality...
Presenting Gosnells 2018 Vintage, a complex and deep mead, with notes of blackcurrant, sloe, and the teeniest hint of spice. To craft its first ever vintage, the meadery worked closely with local beekeepers to source nearly half a tonne of raw honey from the city. That equates to one million encounters between bee and bloom distilled into every bottle.
Christmas gifts don't get more special than that. So if you're on the hunt for the perfect pressie, you can't go wrong with this modern take on the drink of kings. Careful, though — one taste and you'll want to keep it all to yourself (hey, we won't tell if you don't).
Fancy getting your sticky paws on a bottle? Pop in to the Peckham-based meadery for the 2018 Vintage launch on Friday 30 November and be one of the first to taste the liquid ambrosia. There are only 1200 bottles up for grabs, though, so it's best if you pre-order.
