Yauatcha City: The City Favourite Now Comes With A Fairy-Lit, Whisky-Filled Terrace Yauatcha City 4

A high-end City spot that actually pulls off feeling intimate is a rare beast, and Yauatcha City's one of them.

The inside's always been alluring — a crescent strip on the inside of Broadgate Circle, first floor, it's a slender, dark-sheened curve. A bit like dining on the bridge in Star Trek: Next Gen, only sexier. Now the allure's had a boost from a Talisker Terrace at one end of the restaurant — a whisky-sponsored, whisky-filled corner twinkling with fairy lights, staggeringly effective heaters and date-night potential.

There into spring, the Terrace's drinks menu is best hit via the hot cocktails. We recommend the Oriental Tea Punch, a blend of Talisker 10 years, Ron Zacapa rum, blue tea and spices — just gingery and citrusy enough to make you feel like it might be doing you some good, but boozy enough to deliver some thorough cockle-warming.

It's a strong-willed punter who can start off an evening on the Talisker Terrace and stick to warming cocktails and twinkling lights, without being seduced into a table for dinner. (The prices might help your resolve, though: the in-depth, at-table Yauatcha experience is one for special occasions or corporate expense accounts.)

If it's special occasion food you're after, you could do a lot worse than the dim sum section of the menu. Their venison puffs have been splattered all over your Instagram feed for good reason, even more softly, flakily moreish than they are photogenic. But it's the char siu cheung fun we'd repeat order every visit, the rice noodle casings slippery, sticky and nearly as impossible to eat as they are to resist. And prize for unassuming barnstormer goes to the crispy duck salad, a smallish, green-and-brown dish of massive, bright flavours.

There have always been plenty of good, rice noodle-wrapped reasons to visit Yauatcha City. The Talisker Terrace and its limited tenure is just a good excuse to make it now.

Yauatcha City, 1 Broadgate Circle, EC2M 2QS. The Talisker Winter Terrace runs till April 2019.
