Part of our Best Pubs in London microsite. See if we've included your local.
Croydon's Green Dragon pubs sits in a prime spot, just over the way from London's dullest plaque. You know, this one:
Once you've jammed up your phone with thousands of snaps of this utter tourist magnet, it's time for a beer — and the Green Dragon will sort you out in style.
There are dozens of brews on draught; on our visit cask offerings were available from the likes of Southwark Brewing and Bexley Brewery, while there were fizzier options from Welsh brew maestros Tiny Rebel and Coventry's Twisted Barrel.
We do tend to bang on about beer, but non-hop heads can rest assured Green Dragon caters for them too, with a veritable library of boxed ciders (making it one of the best London cider pubs we've come across), and a 'Ginventory' cabinet. Long story short: no one will go thirsty.
It can be the downfall of some pubs to attempt to be all things to all people. Not so the case with the Green Dragon; on the Tuesday night we visited it happily juggled football coverage and an upstairs poker tournament while serving very decent (and well priced) pub grub. On other nights there are quizzes, plus there's a pool table. And did we mention the staff are particularly lovely?
It's no longer clever to make jokes at the expense of Croydon — which is fast becoming one of THE destinations in south-east London — and the Green Dragon is another reason why.
Although that plaque is extremely dull.
