London's highest Christmas lights are switched on tonight, illuminating the top 20 floors of The Shard for the festive season.

Shard Lights 2019 — switched on at 6.50pm on 9 December — consist of three nine-minute sequences, which play on a loop every half hour throughout the evening at the top of the 310m high building.

This year's illuminations were designed by local schoolchildren, and we're promised "an exciting and inspiring visual display to light up the capital".

Last year, we went behind the scenes at the very top of the skyscraper to see how the Christmas lights are created:

Shard Lights run every night, 9-30 December 2019, 4pm-1am. This is followed by a special New Year's Eve lights show on 31 December. Get the lowdown on London's other Christmas lights.
