Mayfair Christmas lights on South Molton Street

In a year when we need some sparkle more than ever, London's Christmas lights are back, adding some festive cheer to the dark winter nights. Big switch-on events aren't happening in 2020, for obvious reasons, but these lights are already on, and waiting to be ogled. If you're going out and about to see them in person, remember to stick to current government guidelines. Alternatively, if you're stuck at home and missing the capital's usual festivities, get your fill by scrolling through these snaps — accompanying mulled wine optional, but very much recommended.

Oxford Street Christmas lights 2020

The world-famous shopping street is celebrating 2020's heroes through the medium of Christmas lights. The public is invited to nominate someone who deserves recognition for their work this year, and a chosen few will see their name spark in an illuminated banner across Oxford Street for a week.

Regent Street and St James's have stuck with their usual Spirit of Christmas theme, and yes, those gorgeous glowing angels are back, strung above the thoroughfare. Apparently it's the largest lights installation in the country, wending its way the length of Regent Street, and making use of 300,000 LEDs.

Carnaby Christmas lights 2020

'Choose Love In Carnaby' decrees the glittering pink arch at one end of the pedestrianised street. The theme of love continues throughout, with words of positivity glowing in neon pink lightboxes above shoppers' heads. The display is in partnership with charity Choose Love, which works to get essential products to refugees facing a tough winter — you can shop online to make a donation.

Covent Garden Christmas lights 2020

Giant mistletoe, glittering disco balls and a towering tree are back in Covent Garden for 2020. It's reassuring to see the familiar favourites return, even if the market doesn't have its usual hustle and bustle back yet.

If you feel like strutting your stuff down this fancy shopping street, take inspiration from the glowing peacocks above. The dazzling birds and their feathers have become a regular feature among the high-end boutiques in recent years.

Mayfair Christmas lights 2020

South Molton Street

We have a soft spot for the South Molton Street Christmas lights — the glowing, icy arches are among the capital's most photogenic lights, and unlike those hung high, you can get up close to them for a festive selfie. There are a few other festive installations around Mayfair too, including some beautiful Christmas trees in Brown Hart Gardens.

Belgravia Christmas lights 2020

Motcomb Street

Belgravia's Motcomb Street has unveiled new Christmas lights for 2020. 9 LED banners are strung across the street, the rainbow colours transforming into a white sparkle in front of your eyes.
