Homeless Shelter Building Wins Architecture Award
Holmes Road Studios by Peter Barber Architects, Overall Winner of the 2016 New London Awards

A Camden building which provides accommodation for 59 homeless people has been announced Overall Winner of the 2016 New London Awards.

Holmes Road Studios, designed by Peter Barber Architects, is a group of almshouse-inspired studio flats, and was chosen from a shortlist of 136 projects.

The awards recognise the best architecture and development recently completed or in design in London, with categories including homes, hotels, office buildings and public spaces.

Despite opposition from locals, the Mini Holland cycling infrastructure scheme in Waltham Forest was a winner in the Transport & Infrastructure category:

It shares the title with Canary Wharf's Crossrail Place:

The project to restore the Grade II* listed Wilton's Music Hall in Whitechapel took the Built Winner prize in the Restoration category:

The extension to the list Shaftesbury Theatre took the Culture & Community Built Winner award:

The restoration of the Victorian 1850s Grade II listed gasholder to create The Gasholder Park in King's Cross won the Public Space category:

The Leadenhall Building took the Built Winner title in the Office Buildings category:

While the Unbuilt Winner in the same category was awarded to Battersea Power Station, Phase 2, due for completion in 2019:

The Rotherhithe Bridge, an 184m span bridge due for completion in 2021, won the inaugural People's Choice Award.

Other winners and commended projects include the change of use of TfL's headquarters at 55 Broadway, the conversion of a Victorian church into East Dulwich Picturehouse, and the new Camberwell Library.
