How Far Have We Come Since Magna Carta?

Some of the speakers at the Alternative Magna Carta Festival.

Are our civil liberties in better or worse shape than they were in 1215? That was the date Magna Carta was agreed and so to celebrate its 800th anniversary, a host of speakers will gather in Clerkenwell this Saturday to decide just how far we've come. Paul Mason, Zoe Williams, Martin Rowson , Bob & Roberta Smith and others will look back at the landmark liberty charter at a ‘Magna Carta event with teeth’.

Expect a diverse program with plenty of chin-stroking. Highlights include history with Paul Mason, an irreverent walk around Clerkenwell with Scott Wood, a discussion about the gutter press with writer/singer Miki Berenyi, the medieval mind explored, satire with Martin Rowson, and food and freedom with beer writer Pete Brown.

The venues are the FreeWord Centre, 119 Farringdon Road (aka the knackered old Guardian building) and the Betsey Trotwood pub. The Alternative Magna Carta Festival is from 12pm on Saturday 13 June. Tickets are £5.
