Merton Council commissioned this fun and fact-filled animated film to mark its golden anniversary as part of the London-wide #boroughs50 celebrations.
Of course it features the Wombles, but also The Cure, Miss Marple, Nelson, Virginia Wade, the Queen, So Solid Crew and The Style Council. The Polka Theatre, Wimbledon Windmill, Baitul Futuh Mosque, Merton Abbey Mills, Mitcham Eastfields station, Buddhapadipa Temple and Tramlink are among the notable landmarks mentioned, plus you'll learn about the Great Fire of Woolworths and see where The Bill started.
Mitcham Bicycle Museum, which opened in 1986, is also in there but sadly we can't find any information about this. We've often thought London deserved such an attraction. Does anybody have any idea what happened to it and its collection?
Merton is also encouraging locals to 'bake for Merton' and put on 'Golden events', plus they're looking for photos of the borough through the ages. Find out more at their anniversary webpage and follow #boroughs50 on Twitter to see what else is going on.
