Fire Damages Battersea Arts Centre

Reports are emerging of what appears to be a big fire at Battersea Arts Centre.

Plumes of black smoke, and flames engulfing the building's roof, have been photographed by onlookers. A tweet from London Fire Brigade reads:

"Lot of smoke coming from #Battersea art centre fire. Please close doors & windows if you're near pic @GlutenFreeMrsD"

Here are images of the latest tweets from Battersea Arts Centre:

The building had recently been undergoing refurbishment.

Update 14 March: the fire brigade brought the blaze under control last night and that about a third of the first and second floors, and the roof, has been damaged. If you'd like to donate to the restoration, you can do so via the National Funding Scheme website.

it is so sad.. this place is for us like our community centre.. how could this happen? we will do our best to help rebuilding...

I live right in front of battersea arts centre. Now the view is ruined, and it's terribly sad. Well... that's an example of what may happen on a friday 13th xD unlucky buildling :/

Desperately sad - but surely BAC has insurance covering the damage? What will donations to the NFS fundraiser cover that BAC's insurance doesn't?

It's such a beautiful building, wonderful events, lovely team, friendly vibe... it's devastating, but so glad the front of the building survived and the amazing glass dome. So it could have been much worse...

When I visited on Friday for an event, I noticed detail, carvings etc. which I never spotted before. Knowing it was almost lost gave me such a renewed enthusiasm for the building.
