For the next two weeks, in the shadow of the old BBC antenna, the Crystal Palace International Film Festival will shed light on independent film makers from all over the world. Now in its fifth year, the festival is plying audiences with a range of cinema, with screenings hosted in some of the area's historic venues including the atmospheric Stanley Halls and the Gothic Revival church of St John The Evangelist. There's an impressive roster of judges too, including comedians Jonny Vegas and Mark Steel.

Nights are themed around different genres: documentary, animation, horror and sci-fi, comedy and international film feature. Headlining films include Time Lapse (shown on 6 November), about a machine that takes pictures 24 hours into the future, and SOS: Save Our Skins — a comedy produced by Steve Coogan's company Baby Cow (that's on Wednesday 12 November). The festival also hosts a marathon night of shorts on 4 November, featuring a number of premieres including The Chocolate Wrapper by Murat Kebir, which details the powerful true story of a young Turkish man tragically killed during an argument over a chocolate wrapper thrown at his car window.

The Crystal Palace International Film Festival starts this Saturday (1 November) with a fancy dress screening of Snow White And The Seven Dwarves (already sold out) and climaxes on 15 November with a night of shorts and live comedy. For full listings see the website.
