New Footbridge For Leamouth Peninsula

east india dock basinA new footbridge is being put in place by developers at Canary Wharf which will link Tower Hamlets and Newham.

Anyone buying property at Ballymore's London City Island development would have faced a bit of a trek to be able to use public transport — East India and Canning Town are the nearest stations but the latter is the other side of Bow Creek. It's also trapped within a trinity of busy roads, the A13, Lower Lea Crossing and Silvertown Way surround the peninsula. The bridge, designed by Davies, Maguire & Whitby, will provide access to Canning Town station for the 1,700 new apartments planned for the site.

It turns out that a footbridge has been planned for Leamouth for quite a long time — the proposed £3.5m Landmark Bridge fell through in 2005 after funding was withdrawn and social Housing charity The Peabody Trust also proposed an inhabited bridge on the site in 2002.

The new bridge's design is considerably less ambitious than its predecessors and is due to be completed in 2016.
