Smith & Sinclair
Melanie Goldsmith and Emile Bernard are responsible for Smith & Sinclair, a company which combines two of life’s greatest loves: sweets and booze. Melanie has never shaken her childhood love of sweets, and in 2013 she and chef Emile decided to make these not-so-childish versions: chewy, sugar-coated cocktail pastilles.
They were originally created as edible ice-breakers for dating games the pair ran, but soon the sweets became their main focus. Signature flavours include a whisky sour, a G&T, and a mixed berry daiquiri, while they will also be creating something new (and secret) for Feast.
If you’re wondering about the name, the pair originally toyed with the idea of Goldsmith & Bernard but thought they sounded more like Jewish accountants than the Willy Wonka-esque sweet makers that they are. Melanie lost the ‘Gold’, and Emile took on his paternal grandmother’s name.
Salvation In Noodles
Vietnamese noodle restaurant Salvation In Noodles opened up in Dalston this February. The idea came out of founder Colin Tu’s frustration at the lack of authentic Vietnamese options among the glut of Kingsland Road eateries, and his belief that Londoners are ready for something different. Colin, who was previously one half of street food outfit Big Dirty Burger, is Vietnamese-born but London-based and notes the recent increase in Japanese noodle restaurants (such as Bone Daddies, Tonkotsu and Shoryu) as he strives to push the Vietnamese version further into the spotlight.
Though he’s now made the move from street trader to restaurateur, Colin will be bringing Salvation In Noodles to Feast, serving his signature hot and cold noodles across the weekend.
Londoner Alex Hoffler and New Zealander Stacey O’Gorman met while working together at the restaurant in Hackney Picturehouse. They came up with the idea of inventively-flavoured gourmet meringues when applying to be on TV show Cooks To Market in 2011 and needed a product. Out of that, Meringue Girls was born.
The exquisitely decorated and boldly flavoured meringues are crisp on the outside but gooey in the middle, and come in an array of flavours including dark chocolate, passion fruit, coconut, gin & tonic, and lemongrass & ginger. Seasonal additions which will be available at Feast include honeycomb & salted peanut and sweet & salty popcorn versions, as well as meringue ice-cream.
Back in 2012, Feast was the first food festival that the newly-formed Meringue Girls attended, and they maintain that Feast is still their favourite of its kind.
Comins Tea House
Michelle and Rob Comins met at university and got married in 2003. While Michelle was a born and bred tea lover, the same was not true for Rob. For him, it took a trip to the plantations of Darjeeling to be converted. Inspired to change other people’s perception of tea in the way Rob’s was, the couple started Comins Tea House to bring quality, single estate teas from around the world to those with an open mind. They’ve sourced an impressive range via subsequent trips to China, Sri Lanka and Japan.
Comins Tea House has also developed a range of creative and modern teaware and accessories which they will sell alongside the leaves themselves at Feast.
