For many, the work of illustrator Quentin Blake is synonymous with the childhood novels of Roald Dahl. Blake's almost-childlike drawings of Matilda, George (of Marvellous Medicine fame) and their contemporaries bring the stories to life for children and adults alike. Now there's a chance to see an exhibition of Blake's work, both his well-known characters and previously unseen storyboards, in London.
House of Illustration, a new venue dedicated to the art of illustration, opens the doors of its new permanent home in King's Cross on Wednesday. Quentin Blake: Inside Stories is the first exhibition to be shown here.
Expect insight into the origins of some of Blake’s most characteristic and popular creations, including his Roald Dahl characters Danny and The Twits. Also on display are his work for other authors including David Walliams and Michael Rosen, and there's a chance to learn about the techniques and media that Blake uses, including inks, watercolours and pastel.
See rough drafts and storyboards alongside finished pieces to get a real insight into the work of arguably Britain's most stylistically recognisable illustrator.
