Behind The Scenes At London Bus Garages

Stockwell bus garage

To celebrate Year Of The Bus, some of London's bus garages are holding free open days to allow the public to get up close to the iconic vehicles.

On 10 May, Catford Bus Garage has a free open day, which doubles up as the garage's centenary celebration. Take a look around the vehicle maintenance area and have a free ride on vintage buses. Choose from the 54v to and from Elmers End station every 20 minutes between 11am-3pm, or the 47v between Shoreditch and Farnborough Village via Catford Bus Garage, which leaves Shoreditch High Street (stop N) at 08.03 and Catford Bus Garage at 09.01. The return trip leaves Farnborough for Catford at 09:52, and will depart from Catford for Shoreditch at 16:18.

Kids (real, and the young at heart) will love the chance to sit on a bus while it's going through a bus wash, plus there will be family activities about using public transport.

You can also browse London Transport Museum's Tickets Please! exhibition, or peruse the pop-up shop for a Year Of The Bus gift or two.

Other bus garages having open days are:

  • Alperton (7 June)
  • Stockwell (21 June)
  • Fulwell (28 June)
  • Potters Bar (5 July)
  • Walworth (19 July)
  • Dartford (7 September)

Keep an eye on London Transport Museum website for further information.

Catford Bus Garage open day, 10 May 10.30am-4pm. Free, just turn up.
