Youth Hostels tend to get booked up over the summer and it’s not hard to see why. Offering affordable, sociable accommodation in some of the UK’s most stunning locations, YHA is a fantastic summer holiday option. But there’s more to them than dorm rooms, great views and packed lunches.

YHA Summer Camps are for young people aged 10-19 and provide an opportunity for them to make the most of their summer break pursuing new activities, making friends and challenging themselves in a safe environment. Held at five Youth Hostel locations in England, young adventurers can choose from six different camps: Go Extreme, Equine Adventure, Performing Arts, Action Adventure, Future Leader and the London offering, Watersports Plus.

That’s right, those wanting to stick close to the capital are in for a splashy time. Lee Valley, the YHA North London camp, specialises in watersports and offers campers a huge variety of activities including sailing, kayaking, windsurfing and dragon boating.

Set in 10,000 acres of country park and surrounded by waterways (yet only a 25 minute train ride from London), campers will join UKSA qualified instructors learning the ropes out on the water (literally, in the activity where you build your own raft), and enjoy communal evening entertainment before resting up in one of the waterside log cabins. Whether you're new to watersports or already a veritable mermaid/merman, the Summer Camps are all about having fun, learning new skills and building your confidence out on the water.

For £365, children at Lee Valley’s Watersports Plus summer camp get:

  • Five nights’ accommodation
  • Four full days of watery activities with expert instruction
  • All meals and snacks
  • Evening entertainment
  • Any in-programme transportation

YHA has frozen the prices of their 2014 Summer Camps programme so there has been no increase in cost since last year, plus they have introduced a 50% funding to young people in receipt of free school meals. Any YHA members are also entitled to a 20% discount, as are friends and siblings who want to join in the fun with you.

The Watersports Plus camp at Lee Valley costs £365 per child and is available for five nights from Monday 4 August or Sunday 10 August 2014. Visit the website for more details and bookings.

The other camps can be found at the following YHA locations: YHA St Briavels Castle in Gloucestershire, YHA Edale and YHA Ravenstor in Derbyshire and YHA Coalbrookdale in Shropshire. Prices for other camps start from £335 for five night, four day activity breaks. For more information on the camps, bursary funding and booking, please visit the website at www.yhasummercamps.co.uk or call 01629 592 530.
