Theatre Preview: Stripped Down Shakespeare At The Cockpit Theatre

The Merely Players, Comedy of Errors

Tomorrow (16 February) sees the launch of a new season of no frills monthly Shakespeare plays at the Cockpit Theatre. Scott Ellis's energetic young company, the Merely Players, eschew sets, wear their own clothes and gather props from the audience in the bar before the show starts. They say the approach is the opposite of what you might get at the National: "Big productions are great but all you really need is good actors and the words." At the end of each performance, the cast will announce the following month's play with the project continuing indefinitely — popping up who knows where after their initial three months in Marylebone. The talented ensemble includes Stephen Leask, Patrick Warner and Lia Burge.

The Comedy of Errors is on at 6pm on Sunday 16 February (each play afterwards will be on the third Sunday of each month). Tickets: £8/£6 conc. Groups of 8+ get a discounted rate of £5 per ticket. Call 0207 2582925 to book as a group.
