Listen Up! Music Interview With Hannah Georgas

This week sees the return of Canadian singer-songwriter Hannah Georgas to London. Her eponymous 2013 album boasted an impressive set of electro-tinged pop stormers and we particularly loved the catchier-than-thou Robotic. Georgas has promoted the album heavily over here with several shows around town at the end of last year and is supporting City & Colour on his current UK tour, which hits Hammersmith Eventim Apollo on Friday. Ahead of the gig and the release of her new single, Enemies, we had a little chat.

When did you start out making music?
My mom put me into piano lessons at the age of 5. As soon as I learned basic chords and my way around the piano I began writing songs. My dad was an incredible blues piano player and songwriter back in his day. I saw how happy he was when he played music and I think that had an influence on me.

What’s the Canadian music scene like for an emerging artist nowadays?
I think it's different for everyone. I hear all kinds of different stories about how artists are finding their way through the music scene. I'm very thankful to CBC music. They have been big supporters and they continue to support indie music across the board. I do think the Canadian music industry embraces and champions new independent music.

Your second album came out here last year. How have you found the overall reception to it, so far?
So far I find it's been really good! My record continues to present itself more opportunities and it seems to be getting received well. That makes me happy!

You played quite a few live shows in London towards the end of 2013 and now you’re back here again — what draws you to London?
The record is fairly new in the UK so it's important for me to be there to promote it and play as much as I can.

Previously you've taken part in Sarah McLachlan’s famous Lilith Fair festival — if you could curate your own festival, which other artists would you choose to include in the line-up?
That's a fun question! Some artists that I adore and would die if I could see them all play together at a festival are... Frank Ocean, Arcade Fire, Chad Vangaalen, Annie Lennox, David Bowie, Sade, The Strokes, Paul McCartney, Beyonce, John Maus and Holy Fuck.

Do you prefer playing your own shows to playing festivals or vice versa?
That's a tough one. Both have their moments. Summer festivals are pretty darn fun.

Is there a track on the album which you are particularly fond of?
I have been touring this current record now for the past year and a half and I always find that there's consistently an amazing energy when we play Enemies and Waiting Game live. I think I would have to say those two are my favourite at the moment.

What’s your live-set up like?
I play keys and guitar. I have a bass player named Cory Curtis. My drummer's name is Flavio Cirillo and Andrew Braun plays keys and lead guitar as well. For the new record I'm trying to keep it close to the recordings because it's fresh. The older material has evolved a little and fits in nicely with the newer material.

Any idea what’s next after you finish touring this album?
I'm writing. When I finish this tour I'm going to head back to Vancouver to write and hibernate. My goal is to have a new record out next year.

Will there be another single from the current album before you wrap up this campaign?
I'm hoping so. Shortie would be the next single we would move forward with.

Hannah Georgas is out now on Dine Alone Records and the latest single from it, Enemies, comes out on 10 February. For tickets to Hannah's Hammersmith Eventim Apollo show visit here.
