Londoners can experience the sights, smells and tastes of Malaysia this Friday without leaving the city. Malaysia Night is back for the fourth year running, taking over Trafalgar Square with an evening of cooking demonstrations, art exhibitions and authentic food.

Ah, the food. It is a giant component of the evening, and rightly so. Over 20 of the UK’s best Malaysian restaurants (including London-based Puji Puji, Tukdin and the Malaysian Pancake Co) will set up camp in the square to show off their dishes. Stick to the favourites such as satay, laksa and nasi goreng, or get adventurous and sample lesser known dishes like apam balik (a sweet pancake filled with peanuts, sugar and sweetcorn).

Live cooking demonstrations by chefs Ian Pengelly of Pan Chai and MasterChef winner Tim Anderson will show you how to bring Malaysian food to your own kitchen. Afterwards, just pop along to the authentic bustling Malaysian marketplace to pick up the sauces, spices and pastes you need to recreate the dishes at home.

Dancers and musicians, many of whom have flown in especially, will provide entertainment, while Malaysian artists feature in a special exhibition. In short, there is a whole lot going on. We recommend you wash it all down with a steaming mug of teh tarik — a frothy hot milk tea beverage. It’s delicious.

Malaysia Night takes place in Trafalgar Square on Friday 4 October from midday-10pm (stage entertainment from 5pm). Admission is free.
