History, Books And Actors In Soho

soholitfestThe Oldie magazine has once again pulled off a storming line-up for another Soho Literary Festival, starting 25 September. We've picked out a few highlights but if you're at all interested in interesting people saying interesting things, interestingly, check out the full programme.

Attendance at Dan Snow's talk on the history of Syria is essential for anyone who's watched the news recently (29 September, 2.30pm); history buffs should also check out Claire Tomalin on Charles Dickens (26 September, 4pm), life and death in Victorian England with Kate Colquhoun, Claire Armistead and Judith Flanders (29 September, 1.30pm) and two WWII events looking at Nazi WAGs (29 September, 2pm) and deserters (29 September, 5.30pm).

DJ Connell, Karen McLeod, VG Lee and Alex Hopkins are Paul Burston's guests for popular literary salon Polari (28 September, 8pm) while Libby Purves, Daisy Waugh, Rowan Pelling and Stephanie Calman form a Bad Mothers' Club on 27 September (3pm). Quentin Blake is also on hand to discuss the uses of illustration (29 September, 4pm).

As Downton Abbey's about to start again, find out about the reality of domestic service with Upstairs, Downstairs co-creator Jean Marsh, author Lucy Lethbridge and Oldie critic Paul Bailey, whose mother was in service (29 September, 4.30pm). Or how about combining two events about family on 28 September with Roger Mortimer talking about his books Dear Lupin and Dear Lumpy (12pm), followed at 1pm by Sam Leith, Phyllida Law, Damian Barr and Rupert Christiansen on memoir.

The festival takes place at the Soho Theatre on Dean Street, everything costs £9 and ten events will have live STAGE TEXT subtitling. Some are already sold out so if you like the look of something, book quickly.

The Soho Literary Festival runs 25-29 September. For more information and to book see the festival website.
