Celebrating Musical Improvisation: i=u Festival

1374427967A new festival celebrating improvisation in music aims to demystify the process of improvised creation, collaborating with artists from other genres such as dance, art, theatre and film along the way.

It's not just about making it up as you go along — the programme offers creative collaborations and ideas mixing classical repertoire with electronica, as well as original and collaborative compositions, practical workshops and some truly improvised moments.

Artists involved include cellist Ayanna Witter-Johnson, the Oxford Laptop Orchestra, un-conducted string orchestra 12 Ensemble, Leafcutter John, Carolina Maggio who makes art from stains, tap dancer Junior Laniyan, sound artist Federico Reuben and "master looper" Cosmo Sheldrake.

Open rehearsals will help bring people closer to the music and performances are designed to be relaxed encounters rather than formal concerts. Click through the events on the website and you're sure to find something that intrigues you.

i=u Festival takes place at Guest Projects, 1 Andrews Road, E8 4QL from 12-21 September. All events are free but require reservations via Eventbrite.
