Scenes that we're more used to seeing in the provinces came to Herne Hill this morning, as a water main burst around 5am producing standing water of up to a metre deep in places. The Fire Brigade is currently advising people to stay indoors while they isolate the electricity supply (!).

The Metropolitan police helicopter Twitter account, @MPSintheSky, tweeted this photo of the junction where Half Moon Lane meets Herne Hill, by the Half Moon pub. ITV London has been collating a load of photos tweeted by residents, including surreal shots of debris floating down the street and the Fire Brigade paddling around on a dinghy.

Thames Water says anyone affected by flooding will be contacted by their insurers, who are already in the area.
