Random London Fact of the Day
This is the Margaret Thatcher Cup. Long gathering dust on a shelf at the Marx Memorial Library in Clerkenwell, it was formerly awarded to whichever person or institution had most riled the Thatcher Government in the 1980s and early 1990s. We don't know much more about it, so do send us details if you have further info.
Good Cause of the Day
A couple of years ago, a much-loved and highly original sculpture of Dr Alfred Salter was stolen from Bermondsey riverside. Salter was a hugely influential health reformer and local politician, and the statue's loss was a blow to the community. A group of local residents are now fundraising to replace the statue, add in a likeness of his wife Ada Salter, London's first female councillor, and provide CCTV to help prevent a recurrence of the theft. Bronzes of the couple's daughter Joyce and the family cat were not stolen and could also form part of the family group. If you'd like to contribute to the cause, a fundraising page can be found here.
