Wilton's Music Hall Fundraising Boosted By Bing

The ongoing campaign to raise the money needed to keep alive London's oldest surviving music hall received a boost today when the search engine Bing gave over its UK homepage to support Wilton's Music Hall.

The Tower Hamlets venue, which opened in 1858, launched a capital project campaign in summer 2011 following the rejection an application to the Lottery Heritage Fund for a grant to solve structural issues.

After finding support for the first phase of works on the hall itself, investment is needed to "protect and secure" the five adjoining Georgian houses, which serve as the bar and box office areas.

Wilton's has £600,000 left to raise in order to, as tweeted today, "fix the building forever". Londoners can support the project by "becoming a friend and receiving our quarterly newsletter and other lovely benefits," said Frances Mayhew, the hall's director. "People can also donate to the Trust via the website, or simply by attending a show and having a drink in our bar - one of the few places where you can have a drink for charity!"

The plug to Bing's UK users is part of the Microsoft search engine's charity campaign, for which its users nominate organisations. As well as an image takeover of the Bing homepage, the search engine is hosting a range of content about the London landmark, including this video.
