Between the arches of Waterloo, disco is shimmying back into town. The Old Vic Tunnels and Everyman Cinemas are recapturing 1977, creating a Brooklyn streetscape beneath the streets of the city: a night that promises to transport us to a world of flares, glitter balls and choreographed dance routines.
Combining film with live music, disco dancers, and much more, Saturday Night Fever promises to celebrate its cinematic namesake in style. The underground streets will include retro pizza joints, gaming arcades, and a 'paint' store stocked full of candy. Other hotspots include an intoxicating strip club, and a vintage boutique with a huge dressing up box full of 70s fashion nightmares / timeless ensembles.
After watching the film most viewers will probably want to strut straight onto the dance floor. The 2001 Odyssey Disco will be spinning dance tracks until the early hours: expect John Travolta wannabes to be throwing sweaty shapes to the Bee Gees until the lights come up.
The brilliant Secret Cinema set the standard for multi-faceted cinematic events in London, but Saturday Night Fever may well corner another part of the market. Paying homage to the film by recreating the setting and era of the piece is a tough task; but, Night Fever, as the song tells you numerous times, is contagious. So get that white suit freshly pressed, starch the comedy-sized collar, pull on the rainbow-coloured catsuit - and dive, beneath the streets of London, into 1977 New York.
