Preview: Westminster Morris Men - Day Of Dance 2012

Westminster Morris Men help keep the ancient tradition of Morris dance alive by bringing a mass tour to the streets of central London with their annual Day of Dance.

This Saturday, the Westminster hosts aren't the only Londoners taking part. Hammersmith Morris Men, Thrales Rapper of Southwark and Ravensbourne Morris Men from Croydon are all joining the big folky street dance, as well as outer orbital friends the East Surrey Morris Men from Carshalton Beeches and Woodside Morris Men of Watford.

Teams from around the country will swell the ranks, meaning eight separate dance tours can take place over a morning and afternoon session, culminating in a mass Morris-off outside the National Theatre on the Southbank between 5-6pm.

Essential fuel for any Morris troop is real ale, so watch out for the dancers in Westminster hostelries between stops. The Day of Dance is free to watch but if their bells, sticks and hankies and the relentlessly cheerful accordion get your toes tapping, do chuck them some beer money in appreciation.
