London Markets: Meet The Makers - Lush Mush

The business featured in this article is now defunct. If you are looking for Lush Mush, the vegetable and lentil sauce company, click here.

Welcome to our occasional series which lets us shine a light on some of London’s best artisan producers and food businesses that attend markets around the city.

Business: Lush Mush
Based: Hackney Wick
What: Cake maker extraordinaire

The brains, face and baking hands behind Lush Mush is Kiersten. When she’s not finger deep in cake mix, she manages to fit in being a mum and a fulltime PA to a Head teacher in a thriving Hackney secondary school. How does she do it? In her own words, primarily by becoming a mad, bad baking machine when darkness falls. Be it late at night or early in the morning, the kitchen is where you’ll find her.

Kiersten almost got her fifteen minutes of fame earlier this year when she made it through the early rounds of the Great British Bake Off, unfortunately she narrowly missed out on a place for the TV final, and though she doesn’t put it much down to this fleeting appearance, it’s since then that her career has gone from strength to strength with her cakes steadily building a cult-like following.

There’s very little that Kiersten won’t make, and she’s been known to assemble everything from Tardis-shaped sponges to ghastly bloodied Halloween cakes. It has to be her picture perfect cupcakes and kitsch cakes on a stick that steal the show, though. They may be stylish, but there’s plenty of substance. Boasting flavours such as raspberry & coconut, morello cherry & vanilla and chocolate & beetroot, these are as flavour-packed as they are pretty.

Kiersten is working towards the dream of one day owning her own cake shop, and it’s with childlike enthusiasm that she speaks of a potential converted van which would give her a mobile cake unit, able to whizz up and supply her wares anywhere in London. If her fan club continues to grow, this might not be far off. Look forward to the days that you can have your cake dealer on speed dial, London.
