Club Watch: GoGoDisco @ Buffalo Bar

Promoting in London is never easy but after nearly two years at the Buffalo Bar, GoGoDisco has solidified its position as the go to place for an 80s electro indiepop-a-bop-a-rama which avoids bland pretention and naff cheese.

With four bands playing every month, including monthly ‘house band’ the phenomenal Graveltones, and different DJs on rotation through the night, GoGoDisco hosts bands from any genre who create a spark and have ‘quality and personality’ rather than bands have been hyped by the PR machine or the latest buzz scene.

This month in addition to regulars, gruff London duo The Graveltones-(think John Bonham in the Black Keys), GoGoDisco hosts ace London Shoegazers Lilies on Mars, as well as The Beautiful World and Tree Pit.

The DJs, DJs Bettie, Alexander Silver Hammer, Loquita and Shifty Disco Boy, rotate to mash up post punk, gnarly guitar indie, slick pop and swooning 80’s gloom- expect the Bangles next to The Jam with some LCD Soundsystem fluttering around.

GoGoDisco Promoter Becky Green started out running a night called Call It What You Want 2007 at The Green Carnation in Greek Street and just picking out bands from MySpace (remember that) and Last FM, looking for bands who sounded good, but as her experience has grown so has her approach. “As the night has grown, bands, labels or management now contact me to ask to play. I try not to have all bands falling within one genre and I don't ever chose bands to play because they can pull a crowd. Quality and personality are the key things I look for.”

With GoGoDisco Becky has managed to create a fair night with bands who get along and want to return, and is exciting and intriguing for the audience with its mixed-up genres. Put simply, it strives to put on a great show that makes people happy.

GoGoDisco takes place Saturday November 26, 8pm-4am, Buffalo Bar, 295 Upper Street, Islington, N1 1RU. £6 on the door or £4 if you click attending on the Facebook event.
