A looter who stole a laptop from a Kensington flat during the riots got slightly more than he bargained for; the owner was an IT security consultant who had done work for the FBI and NASA.
Greg Martin documented the theft and his efforts to track it on his blog under the title ‘Why you don’t steal from a hacker’. Tracking software on the laptop allowed him to monitor the websites the suspect viewed until a visit to Facebook gave away his identity.
