Westminster Tops Green Flag Awards

1,288 English and Welsh parks just won green flag accolades from Keep Britain Tidy. Westminster emerged with a record-breaking 24 awards for ‘well-managed, high-quality green spaces’. Green Flag Award applications are judged against eight key criteria including safety, conservation, heritage and community involvement.

The list of Westminster’s award winning green spaces is diverse. Parks include the newly redeveloped Marble Arch area, Westbourne Green in the North, a 19th Century West End graveyard, and a very modern sports ground in Paddington. Other London Borough award winners include the lovely Victoria Park in Tower Hamlets and Mayow Park Community Garden in Lewisham.

Westminster councillor Ed Argar noted: “As one of the most populated boroughs in London with the additional pressures of a million visitors a day the limited open space we have is particularly precious.”

The green flags will be proudly raised during Love Parks Week, 23-31 July, so perhaps a Westminster Green Flag-spotting game is in order?
