The evolution of Arcola Theatre in Dalston continues, with the introduction of a temporary 18m luxury circus tent in nearby disused space. The eventual plan is to create the UK’s first carbon-neutral theatre on the site, constructed from straw bale and mud.
Development is still afoot inside the Arcola’s new 160 seat theatre in Ashwin Street, which opened in January this year. It has an enchantingly rough and ready feel, perfect for their current excellent production ‘On the Record’ by Ice and Fire. The additional tent will have a 400 seat capacity and will host fringe theatre, circus and live art.
Executive Director Dr Ben Todd spoke about the theatre’s growing need for space; “If you look at how our profile is growing since the move, we are getting really big companies asking to work with us but with only 160 seats it is not possible. If we were to stop now we would lose our momentum.”
The tent should open next Thursday. More news on listings as we have it. Find out more at www.arcolatheatre.com.
