Hackney To Be Twinned With Scarborough

It was reported yesterday that the 'Rose Red Empire' of Hackney is to be twinned with the 'Queen of the Yorkshire Coast' and Britain's original seaside resort, Scarborough.

The town halls call the project 'Coast 2012' with the intention of forging links between sports and arts organisations and running exchange visits in the lead up to the Olympic Games, particularly for children and young people.

When Travis Elbrough curated Stoke Newington on Sea as part of the N16 literary festival earlier this year, little did he know the part he was playing preparing the borough for an official coastal outpost.

We are grateful to Travis - a Hackney resident - for the tip off and should add that his book 'Wish You Were, England on Sea', which is about three centuries of the seaside, opens in Scarborough. How serendipitous.
