What's for Lunch? Pepe, St Martin's Lane

Londonist asks that most pressing of daily concerns: where to go on your lunch break.

Once upon a time, not so long ago, a halfway decent pizza was kinda hard to come by in London. And until very recently, a simple slice of pizza that was affordable yet still delicious was next to impossible to purchase. While burritos, banh mi and burgers have received more than their fair slice of foodie hype over the past couple of years, the humble pizza has inched its way toward improvement, with a handful of places opening up to offer a better quality and right tasty product. Enter Pepe: a by-the-slice pizzeria along the same lines of Malletti, Pixxa, Adagio and so on.

Most pieces of pizza at this newly opened Leicester Square eatery cost around £4.50… and they are massive. A bit on the greasy side with not enough salsa (for this Londonista's preferences anyway), Pepe's pizzas are nevertheless well within the 'pretty good' parameters of dining and provide an especially filling lunch when you're on the go.

A sausage and mushroom option pleased on our Saturday visit (the place was packed but service was swift) as did a slice of the Florentine (with an egg on top, baked to perfection). Pepe also serves northern-Italian-style flatbread piadinas, and the website says they're open “till late”.

Pepe is located at 57 St Martin's Lane, WC2N 4EA. Visit Pepe online at www.pepe-food.com.
