Regent Street Police Siege Ends After Five Hours

Having trouble getting into central London this morning? Parts of Regent Street, Oxford Street and Piccadilly Circus were closed off by police after an intruder allegedly threatened to blow himself up inside a shop.

The man had broken into the Regent Street branch of Accessorize and triggered an alarm just after midnight but when police arrived he claimed to have a nail bomb. A cordon was set up, which remained in place this morning, as negotiators tried to persuade the man to give himself up. He eventually left voluntarily at 5.15am and is now in police custody.

A police spokesman said, ‘Police were called to a commercial premises in Regent Street shortly after 12.20am today following an alarm activation. On arrival officers saw a man inside the building purporting to have an explosive device. Inquiries into the incident continue and police cordons remain in place at this time.’
