Music Preview: Ice Music @ Somerset House

Looking for something different to kick off your cultural calendar for 2011? An Ice Music Concert might be just the thing.

Between 7 and 9 January, Norwegian composer and instrumentalist Terje Isungset is performing three concerts a day with a variety of ice instruments, some carved from ancient Norwegian glaciers.

Using fragile instruments such as ice horns, an iceophone and ice percussion, Terje will perform alongside Norwegian singer Lena Nymark inside what's described as "an intimate urban igloo" on Somerset House's River Terrace.

A sound and video installation called "The Idea of North" will be shown between Ice Music performances, immersing visitors in the sights and sounds of cracking ice and falling snowflakes as part of this unique winter experience. It's making us cold just thinking about it.

Ice Music daily performances at 1pm, 3.30pm, 6.30pm (each performance lasts half an hour). The Idea of North installation runs from  10am-12midday, 1.30-2.30pm, 4-5.30pm. To book tickets to an Ice Music performance, visit www.somersethouse.org.uk. Tickets cost £7.50 (£5 for concessions)
