There are still plenty of bonfires and firework spectaculars to visit this coming weekend despite Streatham Common and Brockwell Park's displays being axed in favour of one super Lambeth shebang on Clapham Common. Oh, and the failure of the Ally Pally trustees to raise enough cash to go ahead with their much loved bonfire celebrations in Haringey. Blackheath nearly came a cropper too but was saved by a canny eBay auction and some fortunate and generous donations.

Local authority spending cuts are hitting so watch out for entrance fees and advance bookings; the explosions and conflagration must be paid for somehow. Three cheers for the councils who are still mounting free displays and huzzah for the Round Tables, bonfire societies, scout groups and local charities that keep bonfire night a sizzling community event.

If you don't fancy the massed gasps of oohs and aahs in the list below and can't be chuffed to put on a DIY event chez toi, head for one of our city's fine vantage points for a top view of exploding lights all across the capital. Primrose Hill and Alexandra Palace may not be throwing their own parties this year but they're great for spying on others' activities from afar. Likewise, Parliament Hill and Greenwich Park. Leave other suggestions, if you can bear to share them, in the comments please.

To bone up on the history behind it all, book for the Gunpowder, Treason and Plot walk in St James Park on Friday 5th November between 1-2pm.
